One of my loves is Twined Knitting. It is an old Swedish technique, the
earliest extant piece that I have found has been dated to 1640. This is where
you can help. Please email me if you
have any documentation that can document this technique being used before 1600.
I would love to begin teaching Twined Knitting classes at SCA events and
entering my work in A&S competitions. In the mean time, my search
continues.
- Twined Knitted Mitten from the book Twined Knitting A Swedish
Folkcraft Technique by Birgitta Dandanell and Ulla Danielsson. The
first picture is a view of the cuff turned up so that you can see the look
of the stitch on the inside. Many of the old garments that were used
for heavy work were worn with the wrong side facing out so that the fabric
would take longer to wear out. Update: I finished the pair and are on
display at Woolbears, Mt. Holly,
NJ because I will be teaching this class soon.

- Here's the picture of the book that I used to make these mittens. I
highly recommend this book, but I think that it is out of print. Pick
one up if you can find one. Click
here to see some of my other book recommendations.

- I started another pair of mittens the beginning of the first one is
shown on the right in the picture below, this time with more decorative
crook stitches. Crook stitches are unique to Twined Knitting due to the
nature of using both ends of the ball of yarn.
On the left is a sample sock in a larger
gauge but has great crook stitches down the top of the sock.
